Arctic Ocean Salinity-Temperature Buoys 1985-1994

Between 1985 and 1994, the Polar Science Center of the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington deployed 24 Argos data buoys in ice floes on the Arctic Ocean, from which six Seabird temperature and conductivity sensor pairs were suspended as deep as 300 meters to allow calculation of salinity and density. A cut-away view of a typical buoy is shown in this schematic diagram. Subjected to all the stresses and strains of Arctic pack ice, these buoys varied greatly in their longevity, but the resulting drift tracks provide a substantial hydrographic record of the Arctic Ocean for a decade. Data from these buoys was a major contribution to the Joint Russian-American Environmental Working Group Arctic Atlas (1997).

The data is available here in an ASCII file of the original 12-minute samples. An Argos position fix is calculated once for each satellite pass, so latitude and longitude are interpolated to the time of each sample. Only some sensor levels, always including the bottom, were provided with pressure sensors to directly measure the depth. Depths of intervening layers were calculated from a catenary model of the cable hanging beneath the buoy hull.

Each "HydroFile" contains one month of data samples every 12 minutes. The text ReadMe file contains more information and itemizes an example.

Data from each ocean salinity buoy are summarized here in statistical form, in averaged bins of ten-meters depth and ten-days duration, with average position, atmospheric pressure, and air temperature. The ocean bins show a mean depth, temperature, conductivity, salinity, and sigma-theta (density), with the standard deviation to indicate the variability of each variable. The average data is in ASCII text, one file per buoy. The text ReadMe file contains more information and itemizes an example.
